The first thing that you notice about this lens is the size.  It's huge!  The case is absolutely necessary because the lens is so big and heavy it would probably fall right through the typical "leather" Pentax lens cases.

SMC PENTAX ZOOM 1:6.7 135~600mm in Carry Case

When I first received the lens the case was pretty much in a shambles.  The edge protectors on the bottom short sides were destroyed, two of the corner protectors were gone, and the thin aluminum sheath that covers the wood, was already bunching up and would soon be torn.  I stowed the case away for a rainy day and stored the lens on a tripod in my study, with occasional use.  The rainy day came and I ordered replacement edge material (1" x 1" x 1/16" aluminum corner stock), four trunk corners with dimples that would act as feet for the bottom of the case, and some blocks of wood to use to reinforce the inside corners of the case, and provide a place to screw the corners into.  The furniture nails are more attractive but not really very functional.

Next I spent a weekend morning cleaning off the case.  It was owned by a Bureau of Criminal Investigation and had seen some hard use, not to mention some heavy soiling of the case.  The lens itself was in fair to good cosmetic shape and excellent optical shape, but it was clear from the case that this unit had spent some hard time in the back of a vehicle.

Here is the attachment lens that enables closer focusing with the lens.

Here can be seen the coupling that allows the lens mount to be removed from the lens, revealing the filter mounting.  This allows for very small filter sizes in comparison to the front of the lens.
